How to Make Your Mehndi Dark

Vijay, mehndi artistBy Vijay, mehndi artist since 2010 · Updated 20 Oct 2026

Mehndi ka rang dark kaise kare? After 15+ years of applying mehndi, these are the tips Vijay gives every client.

Most of the colour depends on what you do in the first 24 hours, not just on the cone.

Before your mehndi

Wash your hands with soap and dry them well. Do not put on cream or oil before the mehndi, as it stops the henna from soaking in.

Do waxing, a manicure or a scrub a day before, never after. Rubbing your skin later fades the design.

9 tips for a dark mehndi colour

1. Keep the paste on for 6 to 8 hours

The longer the paste stays, the darker the colour. For a bride, overnight is best.

2. Dab lemon and sugar once it dries

Mix a little lemon juice with sugar and gently dab it on with cotton. It keeps the paste stuck to your skin.

Do not soak it. A light dab two or three times is enough.

3. Keep your hands warm

Henna darkens with warmth. Stay in a warm room and avoid sitting under a cold fan or AC.

Some people hold their hands over the smoke of cloves heated on a tawa. Keep a safe distance if you try this.

4. Scrape it off, do not wash it off

When it is time, scrape the dry paste off with a blunt butter knife or the back of a spoon. Do not use water.

5. Rub a little mustard oil or balm

After scraping, rub a few drops of mustard oil, coconut oil or a balm like Vicks on the design. It protects the colour from water.

6. No water for 12 hours

Try not to wash your hands for 12 hours, and 24 if you can. If you must, use plain water and pat dry.

7. Wait 48 hours

Fresh mehndi starts orange. It turns deep maroon over the next 24 to 48 hours, so do not worry on day one.

That is why we apply mehndi a day or two before the wedding or the festival.

8. Go easy on soap and chlorine

Soap, detergent, sanitiser and swimming pools fade mehndi fast. Wear gloves for washing up for the first few days.

9. Start with good, natural henna

All the tips above only work with fresh, natural henna. Vijay makes his cones fresh, with no chemicals.

Stay away from “black mehndi” that turns dark in minutes. It often has chemicals that can burn the skin.

Mehndi colour questions

Mehndi kitne ghante lagi rehni chahiye?

At least 6 to 8 hours. For bridal mehndi, keeping it overnight gives the darkest colour.

Does lemon and sugar really make mehndi dark?

Yes. It keeps the paste moist and stuck to the skin longer, so more colour soaks in. Just dab it lightly.

Why is my mehndi orange?

Fresh mehndi is always orange at first. It turns dark maroon over 24 to 48 hours.

How long does mehndi colour last?

Usually one to two weeks. Palms and feet hold the colour longest.

Can I wash my hands after removing mehndi?

Try to wait 12 hours. If you must, use plain water without soap and pat dry.
